NEPAL

World Response has made significant contributions to the building of a small hospital in the remote mountainous terrain of Humla. It is the only health care facility in the area and serves some hundred thousand people. World Response will continue to support the work there by providing medicines and medical equipment.

A small orphanage has been established within the hospital to help abandoned children in the area who run risk of being captured and sold. World Response supports these children financially and helps to maintain the facility and provide healthcare and ancillary support.

The Women's Centre in Kathmandu provides work for abandoned and HIV positive women. Much of the work created by these women is sold through CITTA the US non-profit. World Response supports the women of the centre by providing health care and paying for medical insurance and children's schooling.

Gaikur is another remote rural community. Initially the site of a micro enterprise initiative begun by CITTA for the women living there, the project has grown significantly over the last two years. World Response has provided medicines for a rural dispensary there and is planning to open a primary care facility in Gaikur.

Working out of Humla and Kathmandu , World Response began a women's health training initiative in 2003. The program consists of bringing essential health information to local women from different villages, who in turn would become health care advocates within their own communities. Topics include, HIV information, pre/post natal care, hygiene, STD's, prolapse prevention and nutrition.

Working in conjunction with ADRA, a literacy program is planned as part of the World Response women's initiative. By teaching them to read and write and incorporating this in the health awareness program we hope to make a significant impact on the health of these remote rural communities.
